For a developing country like Uganda to realize full economic growth and development, there is need to utilize sufficient energy resources. The good news is that there is sufficient potential to generate the required quantity and quality of energy in the country, especially by exploiting the abundant hydro power potential available.
According to the Second National Development Plan, the Uganda Government’s target is to increase access from 14% (now 23%) to 30% by 2020, and per capita consumption from 80kWh to 578kWh. This requires an additional 8,200MW in installed capacity, from the current 929MW.
Annual demand for power is estimated to grow at 10% per annum. All these are opportunities that investors can fill, and can be achieved through public-private partners.
